Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso

Sitting grandiosely on a rocky outcrop above the town of Locarno, the Sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso is one of the most important religious and historical sites in Ticino, Switzerland. Founded in 1480, following the miraculous vision of the Virgin Mary by a Franciscan friar, the sanctuary, throughout the centuries, has undergone a series of architectural additions, resulting in the current magnificent structure visible from afar.

Today, the complex of the Sacred Mount is of remarkable value from a religious, historical and artistic standpoint, it still house a few cappuccini monks, and it is a place of devotion and pilgrimage.

Its interior is a shrine containing notable artistic work by Bernardino da Conti, Bramantino, and Antonio Ciseri, as well as a remarkable collection of votive offerings. The convent houses extraordinary wooden sculptures from the Renaissance period, such as the Compianto, by an Italian artistic master and the Pietà, by the brothers De Donati.
