Climbing Monviso

Crown your Hiking Tour of Monviso with the extra challenge of a climb to its majestic summit. Reach the top of the "King of Stone" which, with its 3841 mt/12602 ft, dominates the southern French and Italian Alps, and the plains of Piemonte all the way to the Italian Riviera. Accompanied by an expert, licensed UIAGM alpine guide, you will follow on the footsteps of William Mathews and a team of British climbers who, on Aug 30, 1863 were the first to succesfully reach the summit.

This is a very demanding endeavour, and it requires excellent health and physical condition. Some climbing experience is helpful but not necessary. The climb follows an exposed route. We reserve the right to screen participants to make sure they satisfy climbing requirements. There is one licensed climbing guide every two clients.
Details of itinerary and prices vary based on the number of people and whether or not the climb is in conjunction (extension) with "Hiking Tour of Monviso". Please Contat us for all details.

Womens’ Journeys
Day 1 • Torino - Valle di Po, Italy
Meet your UIAGM guide at Torino Caselle Airport and transfer by private vehicle to the trailhead in Valle di Po. After purchasing some picnic food, we start the hike towards the rifugio (mountain hut), where we overnight. Following the Po River upstream, we reach its spring, surrounded by a peatary, unique in its kind in the whole of the Alps. Continuing uphill, we pass grazing pastures and beautiful emerald-green alpine lakes, hike across a large moraine, meandering amongst boulders, and reach the rifugio. Dinner and overnight at the rifugio, located below the majestic east face of Monviso and offering open panoramic views of the planes.

Day 2 • Summit climb - Salluzzo
This is a very long day, which begins with an early start (usually about 4:00 a.m., but exact time is at the discretion of the guide). After breakast, a nice path takes us to the first challenging stretch of the climb: a vertical rock face with fixed ropes and chains. The route then descends into a bowl, strewn with boulders, and up again to a bivouac. Here the real climb begins, all the way to the summit. After a well-deserved rest to take in the splendid 360°, we retrace our steps all the way back where we started on Day 1, arriving in the late afternoon. Meet the private vehicle and transfer to Saluzzo, where you overnight. Option to spend tonight at the rifugio and transfer to Saluzzo, or directly to Torino Caselle Airport on Day 3.

Day 3 • Departure
After breakfast, there will be a private transfer to Torino Caselle Airport. If you wish to spend an extra day in Saluzzo or in Torino, we'd be happy to make additional hotel reservations for you. Saluzzo is an exquisite town, with an exceptional historical center dating back to the 15th century. It enjoys spectacular views of Monviso and the Cozie Alps. Torino, first capital of Italy, is a beautiful and elegant baroque city. It houses some outstanding museums, including the largest Egyptian Museum outside of Cairo and the Museum of Italian Cinema. This year it celebrates the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.
